SPD4459 Destination - Stone Wall Trees (石牆樹)

Welcome back to SPD4459 Destination in Central and Western District blog!! #SPD4459

There is one special destination in Central and Western District. When you walk through the street in this District, you may find that the trees in retaining walls. Between the 19th century and World War II, the Hong Kong Government and other contractors constructed masonry stone walls to prevent these hazards. Not until the last two decades have slopes been stabilised through cementing.

In early constructed walls, opened joints between stones allowed strong species like banyans to sprout. Traffic and human activities carry on despite the growth of these plants, which further stabilise the retaining walls they are growing on. As time goes by, sprouts mature into fully developed stone wall trees.

As of today, 1275 stone wall trees are situated on 504 masonry stone retaining walls, with 110 walls in the Central and Western District, where most walls remain, with many others in Wan Chai District. A majority of these trees have lived for over a century.

SPD4459 Destinations - Western Market (西港城)

Welcome back to SPD4459 Destinations in Central and Western District Blog!! #SPD4459

Hey guys, Piggie want to pick you guys to a old building in Central - Western Market (西港城).

Let me talk about its history first. The building was originally the old Western Market (North Block), which was identified by Antiquities and Monuments Office (AMO) as one of the Declared Monuments in 1990. At present, it is the oldest market building surviving in Hong Kong.

Urban Renewal Authority (URA) (The former Land Development Corporation) converted the market into a centre of traditional traders, arts and crafts in 1991 and renamed it as "the Western Market". Adopting the concept of adaptive-reuse, the building has been added mant different theme restaurant and boutique shops that turning the building and the vicinity into a place for lifestyle shopping and leisure activities.

The entrance of Western Market

Western Market has converted into a shopping complex, is an Edwardian-style building featuring shops selling arts and crafts, and fabric merchants who were originally located in the old alleys of Central. Completed in 1906, the impressive building has a red brick exterior with a handsome granite arch over its entrance and attractive 'bandaged' brickwork.

There are many shops are selling arts and crafts
The Red Hong Kong Mail Box
Near the Western Market, you can find a red Hong Kong Mail Box, it is used in the past Hong Kong and now we cannot usually find in the street. Therefore, it is very valuable, it you visit the Western Market, you should take a photo with the Mail Box!

SPD4459 Destinations - Des Voeux Road (海味街)

Welcome back to SPD4459 Destinations in Central and Western District Blog!! #SPD4459

Dried seafood is a common ingredient in Chinese cooking and traditional tonics, and in Hong Kong, this trade is clustered around a section of Des Voeux Road West in Sheung Wan, commonly known as Dried Seafood Street.

Up to 50 years ago the area was dominated by salted fish stores, when workers would dry their products on rooftops, sell them on the ground floors and live on the floors in between. As the area became more residential, businesses expanded their sales pitch to include more high-end and auspicious options, including the Chinese banquet favourite abalone.

Today, these shops sporting strange and exotic fare are fantastic insights into local food and health culture. In the mornings, trucks line the street replenishing the shops, which soon become choked with housewives inspecting the likes of black moss, dried snakeskin, dried sausage and expensive dried scallop. The street is particularly lively in the run up to Chinese New Year when households are preparing for festive banqueting.

SPD4459 Destinations - St John's Cathedral (聖約翰座堂)

Welcome back to SPD4459 Destinations in Central and Western District Blog!! #SPD4459

Hello everybody!! This is Piggie again!  Today we are going to explore one of the classic cathedral in Hong Kong. Time to have a historical lesson with you all!

The St. John's Cathedral (聖約翰座堂), officially The Cathedral Church of St. John the Evangelist is located at 4 Garden Road, Central, which is an Anglican cathedral in Hong Kong. It is the Diocesan cathedral of the Diocese of Hong Kong Island and the focus of the Province of Hong Kong Sheng Kung Hui (香港聖公會). It also the Archbishop of Hong Kong.

From the outside of the building, you can already see the building style of the English Gothic architecture. This style was flourished in England from about 1180 until about 1520.
As you can see from the pictures below, The design is well known with its pointed arch(lancet) characteristic. Pointed arches were used almost universally, not only in arches of wide span such as those of the nave arcade, but also for doorways and lancet windows.

Meanwhile, the cathedral also held a lot of interesting event such as Cathedral Choir, Evensong Choir and sermons everyday and week. You will definately have a good time and relax you mind in the cathedral .

The cathedral would be a good place to chill in such a busy distrist and after the whole sightseeing day, aspecially for those who were obsessed of classical architecture and religious history.

Hope you enjoy the cathedral and make sure that you keep following our update for more new and fascinating destination. See you next time!
